His Hands Were Bound
When Surrender Becomes Freedom

“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”
John 10:18 (NIV)
There are things we carry because we love deeply.
Our children. Our marriages. Our families. Our futures. The prayers we desperately want God to answer.
And sometimes, without realizing it, trusting God can slowly become trying to control the outcome.
During a season when so much around me felt outside of my control, I had an experience that brought me back to the cross. I saw Jesus standing before it, His hands bound and held outward.
What stayed with me wasn't only that His hands were bound.
It was that He wasn't fighting.
He was willing.
Later, Scripture brought me to the words of Jesus:
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”
John 10:18
Those bound hands didn't belong to a powerless Savior.
They belonged to the Lord of all creation.
Jesus willingly surrendered Himself to the Father's will. He went to the cross for us, bearing what we could never carry and giving us what we could never earn.
And the story didn't end at the cross.
Jesus rose again.
The hands that looked bound were never outside of God's plan.
Surrender Isn't Defeat
That changed the way I thought about surrender.
Surrender can feel like giving up. But surrender to God isn't defeat.
It's trust.
It's bringing God what you want, what you fear, and what you can't control and saying:
Jesus, You are Lord. I am not.
Surrender doesn't mean you stop praying or stop hoping.
It means you stop carrying the weight of believing everything depends on you.
Maybe today you're carrying someone you love.
A relationship you can't fix.
A future you can't see.
A prayer that still hasn't been answered.
You don't have to hold everything together.
You can place it into the hands of Jesus.
A Question for Your Heart
What are you holding onto that God may be asking you to surrender?
Can you trust Him even if you don't yet know how the story will unfold?
Prayer
Jesus,
Thank You for the cross and for willingly giving Yourself for me.
Today, I give You what I've been trying to control—the people I love, the circumstances I can't change, the prayers I can't answer, and the future I can't see.
Give me open hands.
Teach me to trust You when I don't understand.
Jesus, You are Lord.
I trust You with what I can't control.
Not my will, but Yours be done.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Sacred Ordinary — Notice Him Today
Sometime today, in the middle of an ordinary moment—making coffee, washing dishes, folding laundry, or driving home—pause.
Open your hands.
Think about the thing you've been carrying and pray:
“Jesus, I give this back to You.”
You don't have to hold everything together.
Maybe heaven meets home today in the moment you loosen your grip and trust the One who has never lost control.
Welcome home.
