When Heaven Meets Ordinary

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”
Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

There are moments when we expect God to meet us in church, during worship, or in some unmistakably spiritual setting.

But sometimes He meets us in a bathroom beside a changing table.

Sometimes in a sunroom through tears.

Sometimes while we're washing bottles, folding laundry, rocking a baby, driving to work, or simply trying to make it through another ordinary day.

We can become so accustomed to looking for God in extraordinary places that we forget how often Scripture shows Him meeting people in everyday life.

Moses was tending sheep.

Gideon was threshing wheat.

Peter was fishing.

Mary was simply living her life when an angel appeared with news that would change everything.

Again and again, God stepped into ordinary places.

And He still does.

During one of the most difficult seasons of my life, motherhood, loneliness, postpartum exhaustion, uncertainty, and grief changed the way I understood the nearness of God.

I began to realize that I didn't have to wait for life to become less busy, or less chaotic before I could encounter His presence.

He was already there.

In the exhaustion.

In the tears.

In the questions.

In the quiet moments no one else saw.

Psalm 145:18 doesn't say the Lord is near only when life feels peaceful or when our faith feels strong.

It says He is near to those who call on Him in truth.

Sometimes truth sounds like:

“Lord, I'm tired.”

“I don't understand.”

“I'm afraid.”

“I can't fix this.”

“Help me see You here.”

Those prayers may feel small, but they turn our hearts toward the One who is already near.

Maybe you're waiting for your circumstances to become quieter before you seek Jesus more deeply.

But what if He wants to meet you here?

In this home.

In this season.

In this waiting.

In this ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Jesus isn't asking you to manufacture a spiritual moment.

He's inviting you to bring Him the moment you're already living.

Your ordinary is not insignificant to Him.

Your tears are not unnoticed.

Your unseen work is not forgotten.

Your questions do not frighten Him.

So today, instead of asking God to take you somewhere else before He meets you, try praying:

“Jesus, show me where You are in this moment.”

Then pay attention.

Not necessarily for something dramatic.

Maybe it's His Word reminding you of truth.

Unexpected peace.

A friend who calls at just the right time.

Or simply enough grace to do the next small thing.

Sometimes Heaven meets home quietly.

But that doesn't make His presence any less real.

Where in your life have you been assuming God feels far away?

What ordinary part of your day could become an invitation to seek Him?

What would it look like to call on Him honestly today, without trying to make your prayer sound polished?

Prayer

Jesus,

Meet me here.

Not in the life I wish I had, but in the life I am living today.

Help me recognize Your presence in the ordinary places I usually overlook.

When I am tired, be my strength.

When I am grieving, be my comfort.

When I am afraid, remind me that You go before me.

When I feel alone, remind me that You are near.

Teach me to bring You the mundane, the messy, the beautiful, and the broken.

Open my eyes to see Your faithfulness in everyday life.

And above all, draw my heart closer to You.

Carry This With You

God does not wait for extraordinary circumstances to reveal His faithfulness. Sometimes the holiest place is the ordinary moment where you recognize that He has been near all along.
